Loss of Jamie Anderson - Houston Newborn Photographer

As I was laying in bed Sunday evening, a lengthy post on a fellow Houston Photographer’s business page caught my eye. I sat up to read the post partly out of curiosity and partly because I could feel the importance behind the post. It was within the moment of reading those words upon my phone screen that I was truly reminded of our mortality and how short life can be.

“Friends, followers and fellow photographers,
It is with absolute sadness and disbelief I tell you that Jamie Anderson has gone to be with Jesus in heaven. Jamie suffered a fatal brain aneurysm on Saturday, June 13. I do not need to tell you how big of a hole this has left in so many hearts. Jamie was so much more than an absolutely amazing photographer; she was a wife, a mother, a friend, an artist and most of all, a believer.

As a Christian, Jamie saw the world differently than many people. She knew absolute joy in our Savior. The love He has for His children is unequal to anything we will experience in life. Jamie knew that her place on this earth was temporary, and we are certain of her place in heaven. None of us are worthy of the love He bestows upon us, the endless grace and mercy we are shown. And yet, God so loved the world that He sent his only son to die for us on the cross. A man with no sin, the Son of God, Jesus Christ, died on the cross for you, for me, for Jamie. And then he rose from the dead 3 days later just like we will rise again in heaven.

We do not mourn for Jamie, whom we are certain is in heaven, but for those of us left here trying to imagine a reality without her.
The world lost so much beauty when Jamie left it, but she did not leave it untouched. She left us with tangible, undeniable proof of her presence through her Husband, her children and her art. Her God-given talent and pictures will be displayed for generations to view and cherish.
The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:2
Jamie accepted His gift.

And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory. Romans 8:30 NLT Jamie has been glorified.”

As a wife, mother, and fellow photographer myself, I sat there with tears in my eyes and disbelief in my heart. I could not imagine what her family was going though but I understood how I felt. I knew I needed to share the post immediately to get as many eyes on the status and their gofundme information as possible. . Although I had never met her in person, we had communicated on several occasions online and her beautiful compassion and radiating creativity will always be remember by me and those she had contact with. A share and a donation to aid her family and show my condolences for their loss was the least I could do.
Jamie Anderson your beautiful spirit and creativity will be missed by many. Rest In Peace.

Photohood of the Traveling Dress - The Traveling Dress Project

The Traveling Dress Project is a collaborative project created by Minnesota Photographer and creative, Gianella Simon. After purchasing this beautiful dress from a second hand store, Gianella had the idea to have it photographed by photographers from around the world and thus the Traveling Dress Project was born.

The dress began its travels in September 2014 and reached my Studio Easter Sunday 2015. Its journey did not end here in Houston, but is still traveling between photographers with an estimated end date of December 2015.

By the end of its journey, it will have traveled across the United States and made its way across Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and more, with over a hundred photographers involved.

Each photographer will have the opportunity to capture the dress in their own unique style and vision. The project will culminate with a book release sharing the journey the dress has made around the world. Proceeds will benefit Operation Smile! Operation Smile provides free surgeries to repair cleft lip, cleft palate and other facial deformities for children around the globe.

Missed Opportunities are some of MY greatest Rewards

Sometimes it is the missed opportunities of other creatives that are my greatest rewards. One of them was a last minute session booked by an incredible family here in Houston this past weekend. I was hired by the beautifully, growing Macias Family to photograph their newest bundle of joy, Max, along with his incredible big sister, Emma. This was not my usual newborn session though. I typically schedule newborn sessions between 24 hours old and 14 days old because beyond that babies are not only more awake, but begin to lose a lot of the flexibility they had from the abundance of Relaxin produced for birth. And let’s be real, who doesn’t love those squishy baby poses. Am I right? Now, this handsome little man was born December 19, 2014. So, at the time of our shoot Little Max was just over 7 weeks old. However, despite his age and decreased flexibility though, I knew I needed to make the session work and provide those organic and natural newborn poses his mom and dad will cherish for a lifetime. This was because I learned mom and dad were not given the opportunity to get photographs taken previously, even at the hospital mom delivered, until now. Until our booking…. I was shocked. I can only imagine how many other families missed out on having these memories captured in hospital as well. Especially knowing that most hospitals contract out photographers and are supposed to offer the service to every family while mom and baby are admitted. How do I know this? I was one of those previously contracted photographers prior to our move to Houston, and this mom’s story made me miss it beyond belief. I could only imagine how I would have felt if that was me missing out on my newborns portraits at 24 hours old. Newborns change so quickly and you only have a short window to capture that memory. What surprised me though, is I never thought I would be this passionate about newborn photography. I was always the Beauty/Fashion photographer who never thought she would have children much less photograph them, but once my oldest daughter was born that changed quickly. I had photographed few newborns prior to her, but seeing my baby grow and learn everyday lit a passion that thrives within me now, and the images I take of her will forever be some of my most treasured pieces. Having such a strong love of my own child’s images put into perspective the importance of every family, mother, father, grandparent, etc. to have the same treasured pieces for themselves. I knew from here that although my initial passion was beauty/fashion portraiture, there will always be a place for newborns and children. They are after all the best pieces of ourselves.

I am blessed to have been chosen capture these images for the Macias’ family, and even if little Max was older than the typical newborn, the memories will be there for them just the same.
This Handsome little man made me work for it. But, it is always more than worth it! ________________________________________________________________________________________
